Inspiration
First of all I did the project solo and it's not becasue I am selfish and conservative. It's becasue I failed to get a suitable team mate due to differences in time zones. It has been an interesting experience for me. My inspiration to be a part of this was because I personally wanted a bigger challenge. I wanted to compete on a world stage. I had been participating in hackathons in my country(Uganda) and I hadn't got a chance to particpate at a global scale. Also one of my greatest inspirations for this project is the work being done by the Jane Goodall Institute. They are conserving a very great natural resource and being a Ugandan, our economy has been boosted up by the tourist who come to see these creatures. Chimps
What it does
My application enables various stakeholders to improve the current Chimpanzee conservation areas by letting a user suggest a new area for conservation. This is basically done through drawing on a map that is embeded in the application UI. They then send out an envelope to all the various stakeholders who either consent by providing a signature or suggest edits with reasons as to why they think the original suggestions are not sufficient. This cycle continues until all the stakeholders are in agreement at which point a final envelope is sent out and every one appends their signature to it. This is the process of suggesting and approving the conservation regions
How we built it
I built it using vanilla javascript for the front end and firebase for the backend. For custom back-end tasks I used Google Cloud Functions for example for calling the DocuSign eSignatire API and authentication work flows. I also used lots of HTML and CSS
Challenges we ran into
I found a challemge with learning the technologies. I literally spent most of the time wrapping my head around DocuSign's system and Esri's ArcGIS JS API. But God gave me the breakthrough I needed. I managed to understand and implement. Another challenge was time. I literally did the entire stack my self. It required a lot of persistence and staying up late at night.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Sending envelopes through the DocuSign eSignature API. This is by far the greatest milestone for me in this hackathon. Also using the ArcGIS JS API was something so exotic and cool. I am so proud to even be a part of this
What we learned
I learnt a lot of new Javascript concepts, I learnt a tonne about firebase, DocuSign's API and it's services and also ArcGIS JS APi
What's next for Jane Goodall Institute Conservation System
Well I want this system to help in the efforts of the the Jane Goodall Institue to conserve chimpanzees and protect them. That's the goal. And it will infact be used by the Jane Goodall Institute
