Inspiration

At first, I had two separate projects. The first one where I just wanted a solution to use my computer with its microphone and webcam as a looper so that I could record myself play the chords for a song that would just be loop through the whole song then on another audio/video stream, myself singing, stuff like that. The second project a bit larger would be to allow musicians around the world to jam online without having the usual struggle with the latency.

The usual struggle with the latency can be very easily noted if you have ever had music on while on a call with a friend and that friends tries to sing along. In your room, your friend will be awfully off rythm with the music coming out of your speakers (and it will sound awful even with a few miliseconds of lag) but in his room, the song and his voice might be perfectly synced. This phenomenon has prevented people from even considering playing live with other musicians via Internet.

If we could record our contribution to a song over a pre-recorded loop instead and let the computer at the other side of the connection play them in sync it would be perfect. It's not live as in a live jam but it's done together on the spot and can be with as many musicians as you want so for me, it kinda fills most of the things I like in a jam session.
