Inspiration
As a team, our inspiration came from one of our team member family experiences. (" The story was about Mel's Grandma (Grandma Tata) who fell ill during her visit to her daughter's house in Mombasa City. Due to the language barrier, she was unable to communicate her symptoms effectively to the healthcare providers, she could not get the right diagnosis from the medics, and her condition got worse.")we thought of this idea to create a tool that could help people like Grandma Tata overcome language barriers in healthcare settings and most importantly save lives. We recognized that language barriers could prevent patients from receiving proper medical care and understanding their health conditions. We designed JAMBOCARE to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patients who speak different languages. We are particularly excited about the potential impact that this app is going to have on improving health outcomes for underserved communities.
What it does
The Translator App( JAMBOCARE) is a mobile application that enables patients and medical professionals to communicate with each other in real time, regardless of language barriers. With the app, patients can easily communicate their symptoms to medical professionals, while medical professionals can ask questions and provide instructions to patients in their native language. Not forgetting people with special needs, the app enables them to communicate their healthcare needs effectively. The app is designed to be user-friendly and accessible to all, and it supports a wide range of local languages, for example, Kikuyu, Luo, Luhya, and Kalenjin.
How we built it
To develop the translator app, we followed a user-centered design process that involved several stages:
- Research: We conducted extensive research on the needs of healthcare providers and patients who encounter language barriers in healthcare settings. We also researched the technical requirements for building a reliable translator app.
- Design: Based on our research, we developed several prototypes of the app, which we refined through iterative testing.
- Development: We worked as a team of developers to build the app, incorporating the latest natural language processing and machine learning techniques to ensure accurate translations.
- Testing: We conducted extensive testing of the app to ensure that it met our quality standards and was reliable in real-world scenarios
Challenges we ran into
During the project's development, we faced the following challenges: One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring the accuracy, speed, and reliability of the translations. We had to consider the nuances of different languages and dialects, as well as the limitations of existing natural language processing technology. This required extensive testing and quality control measures to ensure the translations were effective and reliable. Another challenge was ensuring that the app was culturally sensitive and appropriate for a diverse range of users. We had to consider factors such as gender, age, and cultural norms in our design and development process, to ensure that the app was responsive to the patients' and medics' needs and preferences. Finally, we had to ensure that the app was user-friendly and accessible to a diverse range of users, including those with limited technical skills or access to technology. This required careful consideration of design principles such as simplicity and ease of use, as well as developing strategies to promote the app and ensure that it was widely available to those who needed it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud of several accomplishments we have achieved while developing the app. These include:
- Developing a robust, efficient, and accurate translator app that can help primary healthcare providers overcome the language barrier in patient care.
- Integrating state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms that ensure accurate translations, real-time translation, and speech-to-text and text-to-speech functions.
- Develop a user-friendly interface that is easy to use and customizable for healthcare providers' language settings.
- Prioritizing security and confidentiality, ensuring patient information is protected at all times.
What we learned
Developing the Translator app (JAMBOCARE)taught us several valuable lessons, including: -The importance of user feedback in refining and improving the app's features and functionality. -The need to remain updated on the latest machine learning algorithms to ensure the app's accuracy and efficiency. -The importance of collaboration and effective communication within the team to deliver high-quality work. -The importance of prioritizing security and confidentiality in the design of healthcare applications.
What's next for JAMBOCARE (translator application)
Moving forward, we plan to continue developing and improving JAMBOCARE to meet the evolving needs of healthcare providers and patients. Specifically, our focus will be on: Integrating more languages and dialects to make the app even more useful in diverse healthcare settings. Expanding the app's functionalities to include features such as image recognition to assist with diagnosis and treatment plans. Improving the app's user experience based on feedback from healthcare providers and patients. Partnering with healthcare providers and institutions to integrate the app into their existing workflows. We are excited about the potential impact of JAMBOCARE on improving communication and patient care in primary healthcare settings, and we look forward to continuing to develop and improve the app.
