Inspiration

We were lucky to work with a sound designer on this project which gave us the chance to integrate music and sound into all elements of the gameplay. Strongly Inspired by 2D Legend of Zelda games, we wanted to create something fun, immersive, and deeply musical.

What it does

Jam the Silence takes you through techno, classical, and rock n' roll themed worlds where your behavior dynamically affects the soundtrack. Have fun solving themed puzzles while bringing the joy of music to the world!

  • Collect musical instruments with their own magical abilities
  • Jam out to our soundtrack with four unique tracks, composed in house
  • Explore a vibrant world, with three challenging puzzles for you to enjoy
  • Hear the music build and change as you progress
  • Record your own sounds to add to the world!

How we built it

Jam the Silence was made in Unity 2D, and the music was composed in Ableton. To create the best possible auditory experience, we brought real instruments to the CodeJam and recorded them during the hackathon!

Challenges we ran into

  • One of our puzzles involves light physics, which was difficult to implement and required a lot of linear algebra
  • 2D layers for collision and rendering gave us a headache
  • Working together on a git repo produced some merge conflicts and compatibility issues
  • Sound was an integral part of the project, and was tricky to get right

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We made all the assets ourselves, visual and audio
  • We did everything, including physics calculations, by ourselves and only using Unity scripting APIs. A notable exception is a package called LASP, which handled the microphone and which we needed for lower latency

What we learned

  • Projectile and ray physics
  • Camera clamping
  • Audio buffers
  • Instrument recording

What's next for Jam the Silence

  • Keep developing!
  • New themed worlds!
