Inspiration

Our inspiration was one of our teammates' research from the Independent Research Course in high school where she researched the correlation between the Foster System and violent crimes. In addition, our Computer Science teacher informed us about this social equity issue that is often overlooked and requires a technical solution.

What it does

We have created a platform where past offenders can find job listings where they will have the same opportunities as everyone else.

How we built it

We built the website using the software visual studio code and the programming languages, HTML and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

It was our first time doing web development and we are inexperienced in the programming languages HTML, CSS, and Javascript. In addition, we were not able to live share the code in vs code after many tries. Only one person could code at a time on the actual website software. We tried to use Firebase to make a user authentication system and host our website, however, after spending many hours on the application, we were not successful and had to find another way to host the website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of the CSS designing that we did for the login and sign up pages. As we are inexperienced, we do not know CSS or HTML. We are also proud of our domain name that is creative and gets the message of our website and our goals to the users. Overall, we did not expect we would be able to develop a website under the 24 hour mark without previous understanding of web development.

What we learned

We learned how to manage time in developing the website, brainstorming the project idea, learning the programming languages and the different syntaxes, and have time to relax. We also learned how to utilize open source code along with our project idea.

What's next for Jail2Job

Our next goals are to upgrade the UI designing of the website and make it look more professional. We intend to add a more rigorous background check for the ex offenders along with an information contract for their parole officers to complete and verify. In addition, we will add more drop-downs and checkboxes on the job listing page to allow for personalized options for the offenders. We also need to develop a backend or make a database to store the user information from the Sign Up page and store it, so it can be referenced and reused for the Log In page and user authentication system.
