Inspiration

The ViFri (Virtual Fridge) was inspired by the need to reduce food waste and make meal planning easier. Our research showed that many people struggle with throwing away food because they forget about it or do not know what to do with it. We created the ViFri to help users save time, money, and reduce food waste. Our vision is to make cooking and meal planning accessible to everyone, regardless of their cooking skills or busy schedules.

What it does

ViFri is an innovative mobile app designed to cater to a wide range of audiences to help users keep track of their ingredients' expectation dates and suggest recipes based on what they have on hand, including busy professionals, students, families, and anyone who wants to save time, reduce food waste, and make cooking easier. The app is also ideal for people who want to plan their meals in advance, experiment with new recipes, and reduce their grocery bills. With its user-friendly interface and innovative features, ViFri is the perfect tool for anyone who wants to make the most of their ingredients and create delicious meals with ease.

How we built it

We utilized some of mobile app technologies: Front End technologies: build with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React Native with create-expo-app Back End technologies: Node.js, Express.js, External API (Spoonacular)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Two team members were beginners with React Native and mobile app development. However, with our curiosity, tenacity as well as our passion for solving problems, we finally achieved our goal to complete the project as expected. Therefore, we all have learned a lot from working together and we are so proud of being able to surpass ourselves in spite of unexpected obstacles and difficulties.

What's next for ViFri

Adding more features: The ViFri app can be further improved by adding more features such as a grocery list, meal planner, and social sharing. This would make it even easier for users to plan and prepare their meals. Expanding the recipe database: The app's recipe database can be expanded to include more cuisines and dietary requirements. This would make the app more appealing to a wider audience. Integrating with smart fridges: ViFri can be integrated with smart fridges to automatically track expiration dates and suggest recipes based on what is in the fridge. This would make it even more convenient for users to use the app. Partnering with grocery stores: ViFri can partner with grocery stores to offer personalized discounts and promotions based on users' purchasing behavior. This would help users save money and reduce food waste.
