The question that we were given to figure out a solution for was from Production and Environment and reads as follows “How can emerging technologies like computer vision and Artificial Intelligence be leveraged to help not only solve current challenges in agriculture but also help reduce original costs?” Right now, there is a technological divide between larger and smaller farms because larger farms have more money which means more access to tech and smaller farms which don’t make as much are being left behind, we want to bridge this gap and make a cheap, cost effective product for smaller farmers. Two of our team members work at small family owned and operated farms that don’t have access to tech that would greatly increase the farm’s production and efficiency. We think that the answer to this problem lies mainly in computer vision, assisted by AI, so we came up with the product “Farmsist AI”. Farmisist AI is a product that farmers can use to analyze their crops, catch diseases before they get out of control, identify areas in need of water, and it can be used right from their phones, we took some inspiration from the French company called Xsun as well as a Brazilian start-up called Cromai. However, what sets us apart from those companies is that this product will be cheaper and more available to the average farmer. By using high-definition cameras at strategic locations throughout the field or greenhouse the farmers will not have to pay workers to walk through the plants and look at each one. This will also be more accurate and can provide more information than an average worker. The farmer can look on all of this information on their smartphone, receive alerts when there is something that he/she will have to check on and he will have assistance identifying the problem and creating an action plan. This technology will be one that cuts costs for farmers, helps them be more efficient and saves their crops. This is how computer vision and ai can be helpful to help solve current challenges in agriculture and reduce the costs.
