We came up with the idea for OnToo during a different hackathon about two weeks ago. Since March, we've all experienced a lot of changes, especially socially. As college sophomores, just a year ago we were thrown into a cesspool of interaction and were constantly meeting new people, but starting off this school year couldn't have been more different. Our team hoped to create something that would help us meet other people around us and to recreate the experience of "bumping into" new people in a way that the COVID-era has made nearly impossible for the past few months.

OnToo uses the GoogleMaps API to locate a person and connect them with anyone else online within their geographic "box" division. People are able to join chatrooms with different topics within that division. Users are then able to reach out to other people in these chats by leaving them a note in a mailbox before they are connected as friends. The mailboxes can only be accessed when a person is in the same geographic location that the note was left in, and mailboxes are left in a location box for 2 hours after someone has left it.

Along with mailboxes, there is a bulletin in every location box for the community to post about events happening, lost or found items, or study groups.

Once a note has been left in a mailbox, users can also befriend each other, opening up the option to chat with each other one-to-one.

Overall, our team had the most issues with location. Our app requires dividing up the landscape into different boxes and being able to have different chatrooms, bulletins, and user lists stored in each. Over the course of the hackathon, we made a lot of good progress understanding how to get this done and are hoping to finish building out all of our features in the future!
