Inspiration
Domestic violence is a worldwide problem that continues to worsen by the second. We witness and hear thousands of cases where people (especially women and children) are abused and harassed every day. This is a severe problem that can even lead to death sometimes. So to put an immediate stop to this, we are implementing our idea: IURA! The term IURA means ‘to provide rights’ in Latin. We are also inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5: Gender Equality.
What it does
IURA provides safe houses and immediate help (calling/informing authorities) depending on the person’s area (country, city, address, etc.) for victims of domestic violence. For now, we have linked IURA to 10 different countries; to aid in searching for safe residential houses (when testing it out, test the city PUNE):
1- Japan 2- China 3- India 4- Germany 5- Italy 6- France 7- United Kingdom 8- Brazil 9- United States 10- Thailand.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the front end, with an online IDE Replit, and connected it to our Github repository. We also used Procreate to build all the graphics on our website, and Nix to upload the Replit file to Github repo.
Challenges we ran into
1- None of us had much experience with Frontend development (HTML, CSS, JS), and we required help for almost everything. 2-Timezones: We had 3 different timezones (IST, GST, ET) to take note of, including the timezone of the hackathon (MDT) 3- Linking our Replit file to Github
Accomplishments that we're proud of
1- Learning the basics of frontend development and debugging. 2- Creating IURA to get rid of domestic violence. 3- Building our own forum/community, where people can share stories. 4- Improving website and graphic designing skills.
What we learned
In all previous hackathons we had built a prototype for our website and worked on a small portion of the project. By forcing ourselves to code the whole thing, we learned a lot about web development and how HTML, CSS, and JS work together. We learned how to work efficiently as a team and delegate tasks to get the job done, and also inculcating our knowledge of building and designing a website, to create a fully functional website: IURA.
What's next for IURA
Since our goal is to have an international impact, we will be providing safe homes and the helpline numbers of the remaining countries. We are also planning on collaborating with other NGO’s/organizations to reach those with no access to the internet. Our next step will be to invite surviving victims of domestic violence and share their experiences to motivate other victims to take a stand for themselves!
In terms of technical goals, we will be looking into connecting our project to React/Bootstrap to make it more interactive. We would also look to increasing the functionality of the webpage.
