From Recipe to Cart in Seconds
Inspiration
Going from a recipe to a grocery list takes too long. You have to manually extract ingredients, search for each one at your store, and figure out pricing. It's a slow process that adds friction to something that should be simple.
I built shoppableCart to make this instant. Paste a recipe, get a complete cart with real prices from your local store in seconds. No manual work, just results.
What it does
ItemsToCart turns any recipe into a shoppable grocery cart with real-time pricing from your local stores. You paste a recipe URL or upload a PDF, and it automatically extracts all the ingredients, matches them to actual products, and shows you what everything costs right now.
You get a complete shopping cart with real prices, a simplified version of the recipe that's easier to follow while cooking, and the whole thing is shareable. If you want to split groceries with roommates or coordinate a dinner party? Just send them the link, and they see the exact same cart with all the items and pricing.
The app also includes swap features to switch between brands or find alternatives, dietary filters to avoid ingredients you can't have, and everything updates based on what's actually in stock at stores near you.
How we built it
This entire project was built using Google AI Studio's vibe coding feature and deployed straight to Cloud Run. I literally went from idea to working application by describing what I wanted to build and iterating with AI Studio to generate the code.
The core of the app uses MealMe's grocery API to fetch real-time pricing (Instacart support will be supported in the future) and product availability from local stores. AI Studio helped me build out the entire user-friendly interface.
Challenges we ran into
Honestly, just deciding what features to include versus what to save for later was tough. There's so much more I want to add, but I had to focus on getting the core experience right first.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that this actually works. You can paste a random recipe from anywhere on the internet, and within seconds, you have a real shopping cart with actual prices. That's not a demo, that's something people can genuinely use today.
What we learned
The biggest thing I learned is that you can actually build something real and useful way faster than traditional development when you have the right tools. AI Studio and Cloud Run made it possible to focus on solving the problem instead of dealing with setup and deployment headaches.
What's next for Items to cart
I'm working on Instacart integration so people can go from recipe to actual delivery without leaving the app. I'm still waiting on partnership approval for their API, but that's the next big feature.
I also want to add personalized recipe recommendations based on what people cook regularly and health insights that show nutritional information before you buy anything. I think those features will make this something people use every single day instead of just when they need to shop.
Long-term, I'm exploring turning this into a mobile app. Having this in your pocket while you're at the store or planning your meals for the week just makes sense. I really believe this could become the go-to tool for anyone who cooks at home, and I'm excited to keep building it out.
