The Story Behind iTab
Inspiration We were frustrated. Using AI for browsing help meant sending private data to the cloud. We saw Chrome's built-in Gemini Nano as a solution: a chance to build a smart assistant that works entirely on your device, making privacy and intelligence a reality.
What We Learned We learned to work with the power and limits of on-device AI, crafting efficient prompts for tasks like summarization and cross-tab synthesis. Most importantly, we mastered building a context-aware system that is helpful without being intrusive.
How We Built It iTab is a Chrome extension with a core engine that manages your browsing context. It seamlessly integrates with Chrome's on-device Prompt API and Proofreader API to offer smart actions. We built a floating UI for instant help and a fallback system to ensure it always works.
Challenges Our biggest hurdle was balancing powerful context-awareness with strict privacy. We also had to overcome the latency of on-device AI and design a system that could intelligently connect information across multiple tabs without ever compromising user data.
