Inspiration
The main inspiration was the weather feature of Lethal Company. We want to use real world weather data to determine the danger/risk level of going to certain planets.
What it does
Goal is to explore as many planets as possible and stock up on food. It uses real world data to simulate weather in game. The weather will change the risk of flight and success will determine how much fuel is used up and therefore how many planets can be visited. Fuel decreases per day too adding a time limit on the player.
How we built it
Used python and pandas to convert real world weather datasets in CSV form into useable variables. Used said data to simulate the weather in the game by adding certain weights to each variable to contribute to an overall risk factor in whether the flight will be successful or not.
Challenges we ran into
Limited experience (none at all) with Pygame meant that we were unable to successfully implement the graphics and animations in the time given and had to stick to a simpler design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Able to use pandas and real world weather datasets to simulate the in game weather conditions.
What we learned
How to use pandas to handle large CSV data sets and convert it into usable data. Also spent a few delirious hours learning Pygame and PHP to little success. Did more successfully learn a bit about numpy and matplotlib.
What's next for It's Raining Dinos & Coconuts in Space
Would add a money and trading system so that the food picked up can be used to trade for more fuel, allowing for longer journeys. Would also want to use wind direction, and various planet destinations to add another level of complexity to the risk. Oh, and obviously make it into a proper game with animations and graphics as shown in images.
