Inspiration

The inspiration for this project came from the effects that zero gravity have on the body. Prolonged stays in the ISS can have terrible effects on bone density and cardiovascular health. To combat this, astronauts use the ARED (not included) and COLBERT (included) systems to maintain their health.

What it does

The game, ISS Survival, gives the player various tasks to do inspired by real exercise systems and research done on the ISS. The results of these tasks determine the ending the player achieves at the end of their final year (year 3). The three minigames are Maintenance, Treadmill, and Culture. They each take a certain amount of energy to complete and the player has a limited amount of energy each year.

Minigames

  • Maintenance: The player hovers over the wires to fix them, and as a result, fix broken minigames.
  • Treadmill: The player clicks the circle and then follows it around the track to do laps. This increases health!
  • Culture: The player grows a slime mold culture by providing the right amount of media. This increases your research score! ### Additional functionality:
  • Check Up: Takes one energy to check your health.
  • Breaking Minigames: At the end of each year a minigame breaks, to fix it you need to play the maintenance minigame.
  • End Screen: Displays a different scene between you and your boss (Mr. Business) based on your scores.
  • Music, SFX, and Pixel Art: All done specifically for this project and made during the hackathon time! ## How we built it We used the Godot game engine to make scenes with nodes and scripts and used buttons to switch between them. ## Challenges we ran into A bug with Area2D mouse detection not functioning if scenes were loaded instead of being run from initially. After trying many other things, we worked around this by tracking mouse position and distance in the _process functions where needed to replicate built in functions. This was done since not many of these checks would be active at once. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • The art, music, and SFX were all made within the time of the hackathon by the team.
  • The straight forward implementation of sketched out ideas. ## What we learned
  • It is useful learn a game engine before you use it in a hackathon, instead of trying to learn it a couple days before the event.
  • This was our first Hackathon, so we learned that Hackathons are NO JOKE. ## What's next for ISS Survival If we were to continue working on it, these are some things we would add and considered adding.
  • Catastrophe Minigame: A timed minigame that can happen instead of a minigame breaking. This is timed minigame that simulates a critical situation. If not dealt with in a certain amount of time the player loses.
  • ARED/Weightlifting Minigame: This is the other exercise system on the ISS that is not in the game, and would be a great addition to the game.
  • Simulating Bad Cardiovascular Health: If the player's health were to get bad enough, the screen would get blurry and would sway slightly to simulate motion sickness and vision loss.
