Inspiration
As someone that has lived in the Indian subcontinent for over 18 years. I know firsthand how cheap clothing is made and how brands distance themselves from the reality of exploited workers in the subcontinent. They profit off women and children while masking it with "sustainability." They kill animals for leather yet push greenwashing narratives. The Rana Plaza Collapse—one of history’s deadliest structural failures—exposed the brutal cost of fast fashion, yet little has changed.
What it does
IsMyShirtEthical analyzes clothing product URLs to reveal their ethical score, sustainability, labor conditions, and transparency—helping consumers make informed choices.
How we built it
We used React & Tailwind for the frontend, Flask & Selenium for data extraction, and Groq AI to analyze ethical factors from product pages.
Challenges we ran into
Had to learn web scraping from scrath for this, also the mongodb connection was not working on the UCLA web wifi, took hours to debug.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a fast, AI-driven platform that simplifies ethical research, visualizes scores dynamically, and promotes transparency in fashion.
What we learned
Fashion companies do whatever they can to hide their supply chains and distance themselves. A better LLM could also display a lot of historical failures from these companies that they try their best to bury and do nothing to fix.
What's next for IsMyShirtEthical
Integration with a better LLM(than GROK), better UI and more historical blunders from the company shown and what they've done to fix it.
