Overview
The caribbean region is grappling with a number of challenges
- Effects of Covid-19 on the economy especially tourism
- Impacts of more frequent and adverse weather conditions (Dorian 2019 in the Bahamas)
- Ineffective grid infrastructure (low electrification rates in rural Haiti)
Key Problem
- Climate change is causing more extreme weather conditions in the Caribbean, including hurricanes and mudslides
- Extreme weather can damage already fragile electricity grid infrastructure
- Inefficient & fragile grid infrastructure leads to high dependence on nonrenewable energy sources like in Haiti
- Without resilient grid infrastructure countries in the region would be detrimentally impacted which leads to, endangering lives, impacting the economy and cutting off access for those in rural areas
Objective
How can caribbean islands build resilient grid infrastructure and what other approach can improve it?
Solution
Incorporating microgrids with digital twins allows for better economical analysis of the grid, operations management, grid configuration simulation and predicting maintenance needs.
