As Muslims, we often face hateful language that we do not want to see in a variety of websites. With all the growing misinformation, our team decided we wanted to combat that issue by alerting users of potential misinformation and guiding them to better resources. We decided we wanted to create an extension that users can use to check if there's any sensitive content on the page they're on and also warn users if the site or shop they're on is run by or sponsors by Islamophobes. Our extension can also be used by Non-Muslims who may not be aware of the slurs used against us, Islamophobic language and Islamophobic groups, so they may be notified of the harmful content targeted at Muslims.
What it does
The extension can be used by users to check if there's any sensitive content on the page they're on and also warn users if the site or shop they're on is run by or sponsors by Islamophobes.
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
We did not have much resources and experience to make the extension. It was an amazing opportunity to learn about Chrome extensions and we would love to revisit this project to face the challenges we had. We mainly struggled because this is very new to us, we do not have prior experience to creating extensions, and we have yet to create a concrete database of sites and stores run and sponsored by Islamophobes.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It was our first time making an extension and learning to create the UI and searched the site for sensitive material. This was also my first hackathon (Afsana) and I was excited to work with a great partner on a mission I cared about.
What I learned
We learned about Google Chrome extensions, building a website, and working together as a team.
What's next for Islamophobia Detector
Next up, we want to revisit this project and make it functional. We want to get a database of stores and sites that we know not to trust so users can get the proper info they need. We also want to finish the webpage the extension brings you to so that users can know more about the project and Islamophobia on a deeper level, as well as receiving proper resources to learn more about Islam.
