Inspiration
The Isi-Agu garment, a symbol of pride and cultural identity in Igbo heritage, has always fascinated me with its intricate patterns and historical significance. My inspiration for this project stemmed from a desire to reimagine this cultural icon in the digital space while making it accessible and interactive for modern audiences. By integrating this traditional garment into animation and extended reality (XR), I aimed to create an immersive experience that bridges cultural storytelling and cutting-edge technology.
What it does
Isi-Agu: Threads of Identity reimagines the iconic Igbo Isi-Agu garment through 3D digital fashion, animation, and XR technology. It preserves cultural heritage by showcasing the garment’s intricate details and historical significance in an immersive and interactive format.
Through animation, the project tells a compelling story of Igbo identity, while the XR experience enables users to engage with the Isi-Agu in virtual spaces, blending tradition with innovation. By merging digital fashion and cultural storytelling, it provides a platform for audiences worldwide to connect with and appreciate African traditions in new and engaging ways.
How we built it
The project began with extensive research on the cultural history and significance of Isi-Agu, followed by creating a detailed 3D model of the garment. The intricate textures and patterns were crafted to reflect the richness of the fabric, ensuring cultural accuracy and visual appeal. After completing the animation, I transitioned to XR integration, leveraging SwiftXR to create an interactive AR experience where users could view and interact with the Isi-Agu garment in a virtual space.
Challenges we ran into
The most significant challenges arose during the optimization process for AR. Creating a high-quality 3D garment that retained its cultural details while meeting the performance requirements for AR platforms like SwiftXR was particularly demanding. I had to strike a balance between reducing the asset’s polygon count for smoother performance and preserving the intricate patterns and textures that define the Isi-Agu.
Another hurdle was ensuring compatibility across devices and maintaining interactivity without compromising the user experience. These technical obstacles required iterative testing and adjustments, which were time-consuming but ultimately rewarding as they improved the final product's quality.

What we learned
Developing Isi-Agu: Threads of Identity was a transformative experience that taught me the power of merging tradition with innovation. Beyond the 3D modeling and animation, I explored ways to integrate the garment into an interactive XR environment using SwiftXR, making it more engaging and accessible for audiences. This journey deepened my understanding of the technical requirements for optimizing assets for AR while maintaining cultural and visual authenticity.
Through collaboration with talented creatives like Obadimu Janet (voiceover artist) and Ojo Ohiole (lighting, rendering, and post-production artist), I learned the value of teamwork and effective communication in bringing this ambitious project to life.
What's next for Isi-Agu: Threads of Identity
The journey of Isi-Agu: Threads of Identity continues with plans to expand its interactive storytelling and showcase it globally at competitions, festivals, and exhibitions. We aim to use the project as an educational tool to teach younger generations about Igbo heritage and integrate it into the metaverse, allowing users to incorporate the Isi-Agu into their digital identities.
Future collaborations with creatives, historians, and technologists will explore broader cultural narratives, while ongoing technical innovations in AR and XR will enhance the experience. Isi-Agu: Threads of Identity remains a movement to celebrate and preserve African traditions in the digital age.
