Inspiration
The art was inspired by the pixel art mascots for Winghacks, the 3 love interests are each based off of one of the mascots.
What it does
Its a Unity 2D game where you mainly read dialogue and try to choose the correct dialogue options, then during dates work to impress your love interest by getting a higher score.
How we built it
The project was made using Unity and Libresprite.
Challenges we ran into
We only had one programmer and one artist, so this project ended up being a bit of an overscope but we were aware of that from the start and wanted to see what we could accomplish in the given time regardless as we were excited about this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created three different minigames for the project. One was a rhythm game in the style of guitar hero representing playing karaoke with your love interest, one as a pong style game to represent going on a date and playing a sport with your love interest (pickle ball!), and the last was a flappy bird inspired game made to represent playing an arcade game with your love interest.
We created character designs and made detailed sprites. There are also a lot of assets that we created that are not in the demo but that we plan to incorporate into this project in the future!
What we learned
From a programming perspective, we learned a lot about making a plan of execution that can better revolve around making a playable experience then expanding upon it. We first started by making the minigames and then went into making the dialogue and menus, which were the main part of the game. Because of this it was a bit of a time crunch to get these sections done and it would have made sense to start with the dialogue and menus as completing those would allow us to make a fully playable game then we could focus on making supplemental features later.
From an art perspective, we learned a lot about character design and color theory. Basing the characters off of little creatures, made up get creative about how to incorporate these unique features into people. Additionally, from a technical standpoint, we learned a lot about how to create depth in pixel art through use of color and shading.
What's next for Is It Wrong To Pick Up Babes At a WICSE Meeting?
Next would be taking the game out of the demo by completing a storyline and populating our dialogue options, as well as adding the other two love interests to the game. The date minigames for the other two are already prepared so it would be a matter of just setting up their dialogue. Also, creating a points system so that dates with love interests can go well/neutral/poorly is part of our plans. This would involve choosing the best dialogue option to match a love interest's personality, and doing well on the minigames.
