Inspiration

We were inspired by what was happening in the Amazon workplace, and the toxicity between the relationships between their managers and workers. This especially affects minority groups and women. The idea of a place promoting transparency of the workplace is important so that we don't support any group that may hurt its employees, and so we decided to pick this as our project idea.

What it does

The website designed lets the user enter the name of a workplace/company, and reviews about the company's gender safety/equality will be displayed. This will allow people of all genders to know if the company works for them, or not. It will also let people get their stories about the company out, negative or positive.

How we built it

Firstly, we took inspirations from many different websites regarding its UI. We then used Figma to create a design that we liked, and a design that was relevant to the hackathon. After that two of us worked on making a logo that would be displayed on the website, and we also worked on the back-end parts.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges, the most prominent being the balance of timezones; we live 13 hours after EST time, so it was hard to balance high school and the hackathon. So, we couldn't do most of the workshops and activities in the end. We also had to read a lot of documentation since we used new technologies (cloud database Atlas, etc.), and that was also time-consuming.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

To start off, this website was a great learning opportunity for everyone in our group, we as a group are very proud of the teamwork and progress we managed to achieve in 24 hours where 2 of us have just started programming. We have also participated in a Hackathon prior to this and by comparing the outcomes we have evidently learned a lot where our final product was considerably better than what we had achieved previously. Overall we managed to leverage our distinct skills to put forward a final product.

What we learned

I think we all really understood how a hackathon works, since it was our first time. We also were able to learn how to choose designs and UI well, and also really practiced using the MERN stack. This was a really beneficial hackathon to all of us, and was really fun to partake in. We all wish to keep participating in more and learn all about hacking.

What's next for Is it Safe?

Is It Safe is still a very basic website. Adding more tools and options and adding data and information about more workplaces is the main plan. Improving upon design and UI through feedbacks is another really important thing that we plan to do. Maybe in the future, Is It Safe will become a proper website on the internet that can be used by people all over the world to inquire about their future office and workplace.
