Inspiration

We noticed that small business owners, freelancers, and creators often struggle to afford or manage a custom domain. Our inspiration came from a desire to make web presence more accessible—just like GitHub does for coders with github.io, we wanted to offer subdomain.is-a.shop for businesses that need something clean, professional, and free. Will be extending it to Gumroad , Notion and Carrd soon.

What it does

is-a.shop lets anyone register a free subdomain like yourbrand.is-a.shop to give their small business a polished, branded presence online. It's quick to set up and easy to manage—perfect for linking to an online store, a portfolio, or even a digital menu for a local café.

How we built it

We built the service using a mix of DNS automation, a custom subdomain registration portal. The project runs on Github for frontend simplicity, and uses API-based DNS updates to provision subdomains securely and instantly.

Challenges we ran into

Handling DNS propagation delays and preventing abuse were two major challenges. We also had to make the UI beginner-friendly while still offering advanced controls for tech-savvy users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we made it truly free, functional, and usable without requiring users to touch complicated settings. Seeing people use is-a.shop subdomains to actually promote their businesses will be incredibly rewarding.

What we learned

We learned the importance of balancing simplicity with flexibility. Providing Something simple that people actually need.

What's next for is-a.shop

We plan to introduce analytics for subdomain traffic, optional custom DNS records, and deeper integrations with site builders like Notion, Carrd, and Gumroad to make it even more useful for entrepreneurs.
