Inspiration
I came as a solo participant and wanted to find the inspiration during the Hackathon. And the workshops at this hackathon were the inspiration! This project is simple, thanks to Replit, but powerful, thanks to the strong features of GPT. As an experienced founder, I was super skeptical about LLM and saw it as another 'current thing.' But I was blown away by the actual advantages that AI push notifications can give my apps. So, I started to implement this idea into my current iOS app, Filtsy, right away, and I'm waiting for the App Store review to try these pushes out on almost half a million of our users, who I hope will laugh out loud and have so much fun after they receive them!
What it does
Smart, funny phrases may not make everyone laugh, but they evoke good emotions in people. This reaction is opposite to a usual push notification, which users unconsciously stress out about and want to avoid. Ironicall uses GPT's ability to understand context and creates funny push notifications using the OpenAI GPT API. This will surely improve the most important KPI of most apps: Retention.
How we built it
I used Replit with Ghostwriter and a lot of ChatGPT. As a solo participant, I knew there were not many areas one can tackle, so I embraced that my project could only succeed if it would be a creative project, not a technical one. I saw a lot of large teams who didn't even attend workshops which took most of the first day, which only leaves you the second day to build if you're going solo.
Challenges we ran into
Demoing push notifications with mobile apps is tricky: the result is actually delightful when you make some action in an app and don't expect a funny notification, but then you receive one which makes you laugh. However, to demo this in a realistic manner is challenging. Also, the OpenAI GPT-4 API requires an invitation, and version 3.5 is significantly less cool.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Ironicall indeed looks like a real project which could even be a real B2B startup, making the lives of other startups and their clients much better and more fun!
What we learned
GPT and Replit are cool when you come up with an implementation that fits the strong sides of the technology.
What's next for Ironicall: GPT pushes to boost Retention of apps
I'll be waiting for the results of real-life tests on Filtsy iOS app users. My product experience leads me to expect really meaningful improvements in Retention for Filtsy.
