Inspiration
Our inspiration came from hearing MDC's first challenge and seeing how important this application can be once it is created. We saw that choosing a career can be overwhelming when presented with so many options. An application to simplify this process for students would help reduce that stress. The Student Advisor application is designed to assist students in managing their academic journey.
What it does
It provides features for course recommendations and advisor information, leveraging Supabase database as the backend service. What Iter does is that it begins with inputs as Name, Target Major, and Desired Job/Career. The outputs are course catalog for the specific institution, road map to graduate all the way to PhD, internship opportunities, and annual earning potential.
How we built it
We built it by using GitHub and Visual Studio Code. Other softwares/AIs/websites we used are Gemini and Figma. Our thought process was the following: Typescript -> CSS -> Javascript -> API -> Local Host and/or Database SQL -> Cloudfare. The Student Advisor application is a full-stack web application that includes technologies like Typescript and Next.js as a front-end to present dashboards, roadmaps and charts to visually show the student their academic and career journey. The backend database is stored in PostgreSQL in Supabase as a service.
Challenges we ran into
Initially we ran into problems in fixing the frontend folder, installing dev packages, and understanding how to get an API for our project. We had a small team of 2 and we had too much work to accomplish to complete a main viable product full-stack web application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a full-stack web application that is designed to assist students in managing their academic and career journey. We are proud of using Figma and Gemini to create the template code.
What we learned
We learned to simplify our application, the importantance of brainstorming, and that AI has a lot of errors when prompting to do certain tasks within Visual Code.
What's next for Iter
With our Project Iter, we plan on improving student’s lives through letting them choose a dream pathway for their education.
