Inspiration
"Ipon" means savings in Filipino, and it's something almost every Filipino worries about. A lot of us, especially those working abroad, earn in one currency and support family in another. Most budgeting apps are either too complicated, made for other countries, or need you to build your own Excel sheet. People just want a simple answer: if I keep spending like this, how much will I actually have in a year? So I built a tool that answers that in a few clicks.
What it does
You enter your current savings, your monthly income and your monthly expenses like rent, utilities, internet and food. Ipon Forecast then shows you:
A 6 month and 12 month savings projection
A clear breakdown of where your money goes
An AI analysis that reads your actual numbers and gives personal advice
If your expenses are too high, the AI warns you and tells you exactly which areas to adjust. It works like a simple financial advisor that's always available.
It also supports multiple currencies, including PHP, USD, SGD, JPY and GBP, so it works whether you earn at home or overseas.
How we built it
It's built with Next.js and TypeScript and deployed on Vercel. The AI analysis runs on Groq using the GPT-OSS 20B model, which is fast enough that the advice shows up almost instantly. The API call goes through a server route so the key stays hidden and never reaches the browser.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the AI to give advice that's useful and specific, not generic tips like "spend less", took a lot of prompt tuning. I also had to make sure the AI always returns clean, structured results so the app can display them properly every time. Supporting multiple currencies without confusing the user was another thing I had to get right.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It's completely free and anyone can use it in under a minute. People who never tracked their budget before can now see their whole year ahead and get advice that's based on their own numbers.
What we learned
Simple tools win. Most people don't need a full accounting app, they just need one clear number and a nudge in the right direction. I also learned a lot about getting reliable, structured output from AI models.
What's next for Ipon Forecast
Savings goals with a progress tracker, a Tagalog version of the AI advice, and charts that compare your plan against what you actually saved each month.
