Inspiration
I've been repeatedly running into the same problem with my friends for the last few months - whenever we go out, split food, or get a ride together, we pay each others' shares and it leaves behind a huge mess of who owes how much to who and when. I am exceptionally bad at math AND incredibly forgetful, so a solution was due.
What it does
You log each amount of debt you owe or that is owed to you and keep track of the dates, reasons, and the net amount you owe someone. You can delete logs once they're cleared, or entire entries too.
How I built it
I have not had much experience with web development and this being my first project, I decided to just stick to plain JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. To keep user data saved in the browser, localStorage is used.
Challenges I ran into
I had trouble storing data for multiple logs per entry in localStorage, and was not able to display the data properly for a long while. A little more research solved the issues. Grappling with CSS was also a huge part of this process.
What I learned
I learnt the basics of front-end web development, such as taking inputs, functioning buttons, as well as good and responsive design.
What's next for IOU
Ideally, I would like the user to be able to login using their email and have all their data connected to it, so that it is transferable across devices. I would also like to add a notification system so that the user is reminded of any debt that is uncleared for too long.
