Inspiration
We were inspired by the current cultural climate, ongoing movements, global warming activism, and others who were seeking to bring attention to social issues. Since it is almost impossible for anyone to keep up with all relevant issues, we wanted to build a website/database that compiles these issues and provide methods for people to contribute to them.
What it does
Involvepedia is an activism-based Quizlet/Tinder hybrid, with the mission of educating people on social justice issues tailored to their interest. In the site, users can browse through a variety of social justice movements, and with a “swipe right” on a card, a longer description will pop up, giving further information on the topics as well as informing ways that users can help/stay involved.
How we built it
We utilized CSS, JavaScript, HTML, and Vue.js to build our website. We primarily used VSCode and its various plugins (like Gitlens) to develop our project.
Challenges we ran into
Since most of our team members are unfamiliar with web development, we faced a pretty steep learning curve during the start of the hackathon. However, through trial and error, we were able to understand the various principles and rules that govern web-based languages. We also faced some challenges regarding “pulling and pushing” programs onto github, because this is the first time some of us have worked on Github.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since most members have never attended a hackathon before, we are incredibly proud of making a fairly well-polished website within such a short time. Our team is also proud of the stuffs we have learned from this event, either through our project or attending the various workshops. Finally, we enjoyed helping and spending time with one another throughout the event, which made this experience even more unforgettable to us.
What I learned
Through this event, we not only understood our strengths, but also about our weaknesses in programming. We hope to use what we have learned and acquired from this experience to make ourselves more well-rounded and effective programmers.
What's next for Involvepedia
The goal is to expand the database of cards from just a few to hundreds. We will tag every card with region and topic tags, allowing us to identify which areas of social justice our users are interested in, and alter their feed accordingly. We will also allow users to submit cards for social justice areas that they are interested in. These cards will be extensively checked by moderators to ensure good faith and accuracy before they are released into the general pool.
