Inspiration

InvoiceFree.uk was created to make invoicing simpler for UK tradespeople, sole traders, freelancers and CIS subcontractors.

Many small businesses do not need complicated accounting software. They need a fast, mobile-friendly way to create a professional invoice, send it to a customer and keep a clear record of what has been paid.

The project was inspired by the real problems faced by people working on-site who often create invoices from their phones and want something simple, UK-specific and easy to understand.

What it does

InvoiceFree.uk helps users:

Create and send professional UK invoices
Add business and customer details
Handle VAT, CIS deductions and reverse-charge wording
Download invoice PDFs
Track sent and paid invoices
Mark payments as received
Export invoice records
Use the platform easily from a mobile phone

The platform is live and already being used by real UK businesses.

How we built it

InvoiceFree.uk was built as a web-based SaaS product using a modern full-stack application, a production database and cloud deployment.

AI-assisted development was used throughout the product-building process for planning, debugging, testing, content creation and product improvements.

For OpenAI Build Week, Codex is being used to review and improve a focused part of the live product, with emphasis on safer invoice sending, clearer validation and fewer user mistakes.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge has been keeping the product simple while still supporting important UK invoicing requirements.

The platform needs to support tradespeople and CIS users without becoming complicated accounting software.

Other challenges included:

Preserving historical invoice activity
Clear user activation tracking
UK-specific tax and invoice wording
Building trust as a new platform

Reached 84 registered users
Supported 126 invoices created and 72 invoices sent
Processed more than £70,000 in live invoice value
Built UK-specific VAT, CIS and reverse-charge support
Completed a full HMRC sandbox journey
Created a mobile-friendly experience used by real businesses

What we learned

We learned that users value speed and clarity more than unnecessary features.

Real usage data showed that many users can sign up, add their business details and send an invoice very quickly when the process is simple.

We also learned how important accurate product analytics are. Founder dashboards must reflect real user behaviour correctly, especially when invoices are edited or deleted.
