Problem Statement

Over 1.1 million NYC households were unbanked or underbanked in 2013 — a higher share than the national average. Just blocks from Wall Street, many New Yorkers lacked basic access to financial tools.

Key User Insights

Unbanked rates were highest in low-income, immigrant-heavy neighborhoods. Foreign-born residents faced barriers like ID requirements, language gaps, and mistrust of banks. Income alone didn’t determine access—even with rising incomes, many still relied on check cashers and money orders.

How This Project Helps Users

Visualizes where financial exclusion lives, borough by borough. Surfaces who are left out — by income, immigrant status, or neighborhood. Provides city leaders, nonprofits, and fintechs with data to guide inclusive solutions.
