Financial independence is
Learning in a hands-on way through experimentation is extremely effective, and we felt it was necessary for students to be able to learn about this
What it does
FinSim is a fully simulated enviroment that allows users of different abilities to learn about personal finance, and finance more generally.
Our system models factors such as income tax, savings accounts based on current (simulated) interest rates, as well as allowing investments in different areas (index funds, risky assets such as Cryptocurrencies, and safe assets like gold). All the simulated data is derived using accurate models we designed, based on real world data.
This allows users to learn about the benefits and disadvantages of various investment strategies, the importance of diversification, and a broader understanding of personal finance in general.
How we built it
Our software is broken down into 3 main components:
- The game logic:
The hame state is on the webserver, including random processes for asset price simulation, and game states traking the players asets.
- The Flask server:
This served the webpage and hosted the game's api
- The web app uses the FlaskAPI to provide a clean enduser experience
Challenges we ran into
We all learned something new throughout this project. Most of the team had never worked on a full stack web project before, and we collectively learned a lot about how to architect and execute a web project, however we ran into a number or CSS issues that took some time to fix.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
