Inspiration
The inspiration behind building this app was to engage more first generation, female students to build better financial literacy skills. A big thing about financial literacy is putting yourself out there so building this app helped bridging that gap between those that are scared and verified professionals with years of financial experience. We also wanted to make this app both about career advice and financial advice as all problems may not be oriented around just financial advice and young students may just want career advice.
What it does
It's an app that allows mentees with financial concerns or career concerns to connect with experienced professionals. The mentees are able to fill out a questionnaire to find a suitable mentor and they are also allowed access to a question thread to find frequently asked questions. Mentors with experience are also able to sign up through this app and are also given a questionnaire to see their mentor style. A confidence tracker is used to keep the mentees engaged and activity and upvotes allow for an increase in this confidence bar.
How we built it
We built InvestInMe by using Python for the backend. For the frontend, we chose to use Swift.
Challenges we ran into
Trying to figure out how to write the algorithm for the questionnaire and how to match mentees to a suitable mentor. Another challenge we ran into was connecting the buttons so that every time someone answers a question or upvotes a response, updating the confidence tracker became difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to use what we heard from the panels and integrate into our project. We are also proud that we came up with a creative solution to a prevalent problem with financial literacy and career advice.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate python and swift together and how to integrate generative AI into actual products. Our team also learned how to better work together as a team by splitting up tasks based on experience. As for our product, we're proud that it had multiple layers and angles considering the time constraint that we've had.
What's next for InvestInMe
Creating a bigger community of individuals who can help out college students. Another goal of ours is to integrate an AI chatbot that could better answer frequently asked questions so not every interaction requires a mentor.
