Inspiration

Every summer I resolve to learn something new in an attempt to not waste my summer, but I always end up doing nothing. That's why I wanted an app that would make my summer more productive. I have always wanted to learn about stocks more thoroughly but I have never been able to because I didn't know where to start.

What it does

This app tells you about the top gainers, top losers, and most active stocks in the market currently. It shows you the change in percentage, the ticker, the change amount and the volume of each. You can also view info about the company easily including its market cap, p/e ratio, industry, sector, headquarters location, interactive stock charts and current news. You can also read the top news stories about stocks.

How we built it

This app was created using Expo React Native and Google Firebase. We also used NativeWind for styling and several apis. I used the News API to get current news about stocks, AlphaVantage, Financial Modeling Prep API, Polygon API, and TradingView API to get stock data. I used the DiffBot API to web scrape the news articles for content and the OpenAI API to clean up the scraped content.

Challenges we ran into

A challenge I ran into was when I web scraped the news article it would end up formatted badly and contain all kinds of junk. After trying to figure out a way to solve this issue, I ended up using the OpenAI API to clean up the scraped news.

I am proud of the design of the app.

What we learned

I learned a lot about react-native and expo. I have only ever made websites before so it was a fun experience learning how to make a mobile app. Expo is extremely convenient and sleek and I plan to use it a lot more going forward.

What's next for Invested

I didn't have time to finish a feature where the user can save their favorite stocks and get push notifications for them. I plan on working on that next.
