Inspiration
One of the main issues for those trying to get into the investment field is lack of education. People aren't sure how to start investing, and are afraid of risking their finances.
What it does
InvestEd is an educational investment simulation tool. It allows a user to experience the process of investing and creating an investment portfolio in a sandbox environment. Users start off with some initial funds, and can choose different options to invest in, all while checking news feeds to see the current market trends.
How we built it
The backend of the system uses Python. Using Flask, we were able to create APIs for the React Native frontend to interact with the backend.
Challenges we ran into
It was challenging to make sure the frontend worked correctly due to all the complex interactions between the two layers of the tech stack.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We made a system that behaves similarly to the real world. The market evolves and shifts, and the user needs to learn to diversify their investments and keep track of the market to effectively invest. We are proud of how useful the tool can be for teaching the basics of investing.
What we learned
We learned a lot about the investment process while making InvestEd. We conducted a lot of research on different investment opportunities, such as bonds, CDs, etc. We put our research to use in InvestEd, teaching what we learned to users of our tool.
What's next for InvestEd
We have plans to integrate Generative AI such as Llama or ChatGPT to allow for more natural and emergent market behaviors. Language models would be able to generate completely new events for the market to react to, and would make the simulator even more immersive.
