Inspiration
As an investor frustrated by greenwashing and the lack of clear ESG tools, I wanted to create a platform that lets people invest without sacrificing their values or returns. Watching peers struggle to verify corporate ESG claims sparked the idea for GreenInvest—simple, actionable, and rooted in real data.
What it does
GreenInvest empowers values-driven investors to build, manage, and monitor ESG-aligned portfolios. It scores 5,000+ companies on environmental, social, and governance metrics, detects misleading greenwashing claims, and tracks the real-world impact of investments (e.g., CO2 avoided, renewable energy financed).
How we built it
We started with core ESG scoring logic (weighted 40/30/30 for E/S/G pillars) and built a React frontend for intuitive UX. We integrated Auth0 for login, Stripe for subscription tiers, and Chart.js for impact dashboards. Backend APIs pull real ESG data, with PostgreSQL storing user portfolios and preferences.
Challenges we ran into
Sourcing reliable, up-to-date ESG data for 5,000+ companies was tough—we had to validate multiple data providers to ensure accuracy. Balancing real-time portfolio ESG score calculations with performance also required optimizing our weighting algorithms to avoid lag.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a greenwashing detector that accurately flags misleading corporate claims, created a responsive portfolio builder with drag-and-drop functionality, and launched three subscription tiers that scale to user needs—all while keeping the UX accessible for beginner-to-intermediate investors.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of ESG methodology and the complexities of translating raw data into actionable insights. We also learned how to balance financial performance metrics with non-financial impact tracking, and the importance of clear communication for values-driven users.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand beyond US stocks to include European markets, add tax-optimization features for cross-border investors, and refine our greenwashing detection with more granular controversy tracking. We’re also exploring integrations with brokerage accounts to streamline portfolio execution.
