Inspiration

“Into The Forest" was born from our team's mutual struggle with motivation when working from home in lockdown. Acknowledging exercise, sleep and focus were the three main areas most negatively impacted we decided to create a sweet website that would gamify these habits and incentivise us to maintain them.

About our website

“Into The Forest" allows users to input their daily steps, sleep and productive minutes and transform these into the growth of a virtual forest.

The plants grow as more points are collected - culminating in a full forest scene (with cute fox!) when users reach the assigned point goal. The forest is updated every 22850 points, for a total of 8 different growth stages.

Challenges

We faced some challenges along the way - mostly in the form of discovering that certain strategies were too difficult for us to implement. For example, we originally intended progress to be saved by maintaining a database of users and giving users login details. We found this to be too difficult for our skill level within the given time. These problems were all overcome in extra brainstorming sessions, where we found putting our heads together quickly led us to workarounds that turned out to be even more efficient than our original ideas.

Why we're proud

noCoffee() throws IOException is especially proud of all the skills we picked up along the way - we went into Hackiethon with very limited knowledge of web design and no experience with git and version control. Less than 48 hours later, we've built a website from scratch and now whiz through pushes and pulls (and we learnt how to use branches!). We're pleasantly surprised and very happy with the progress we've made in our abilities.

What's next

There are many features we thought would be great to add to "Into The Forest" in the future with more time. These include the ability for users to set a custom goal, allowing them to grow the forest at a rate that suits their inspiration level, as well as adding more stages to the forest, various other areas that can be cared for (like a veggie patch, underwater scene, jungle and more) and even plants that are specific to each metric (for example, a tree that grows only with more steps). We would also love if users could choose to let others visit their forest, potentially as extra motivation if the experience could be shared with friends.
