Inspiration
The high rate of maternal and infant mortality in underserved communities inspired us to create Intimia. Many pregnant women lack access to timely health information, reminders for checkups, or proximity to care centers. We wanted to create a mobile solution that brings essential prenatal care closer to women—especially young mothers in rural and peri-urban areas.
What it does
Intimia is a pregnancy tracking app that: Allows pregnant women to track their pregnancy week by week. Sends reminders for prenatal consultations, vaccinations, and supplements. Offers educational content (nutrition, symptoms, baby development). Provides access to a network of local midwives and nearby health centers. Supports emergency alerts in case of warning signs.
How I built it
We built Intimia using: Flutter for cross-platform mobile development (Android/iOS). Firebase for user authentication and real-time database. Geolocation APIs to suggest nearby clinics and emergency support. Node js with Posgresql for backend APIs and secure data storage. We followed a user-centric design approach and consulted midwives and community health workers to ensure relevance and usability.
Challenges I ran into
Ensuring offline support for women in areas with poor connectivity. Designing a simple and intuitive UI for first-time smartphone users. Collecting relevant health data while respecting user privacy. Integrating local languages and cultural aspects of maternal care.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Successfully developed a working MVP that was tested by real users. Built a feature for emergency alerts that can save lives. Partnered with local health workers for validation and support. Created a solution that can be adapted for other maternal health contexts in Africa.
What I learned
How to build scalable and user-friendly mobile health apps. The importance of local partnerships and listening to users. That small digital innovations can make a huge difference in women’s lives. Building trust is key when dealing with personal health information.
What's next for intimia
Launch pilot programs in rural health centers. Integrate with national health systems (e.g., antenatal records). Add support for postnatal care and newborn monitoring. Translate the app into multiple local languages. Seek partnerships with NGOs and health ministries for wider impact.
