InterviewIQ AI – Your Personal AI Interview Coach
Inspiration
Preparing for technical interviews can be overwhelming, especially for students and first-time job seekers. Many candidates know the concepts but struggle with interview confidence, personalized practice, and actionable feedback. Existing mock interview platforms are often expensive, generic, or fail to adapt to an individual's background.
As a student preparing for software engineering placements myself, I wanted to build a tool that makes high-quality interview preparation accessible to everyone. That idea became InterviewIQ AI an AI-powered interview coach that delivers personalized interview experiences based on a candidate's resume and target role.
What It Does
InterviewIQ AI simulates a realistic interview experience by combining resume analysis with conversational AI.
Users can:
- Upload a PDF or DOCX resume.
- Select their target role.
- Participate in an adaptive AI-powered mock interview.
- Answer one question at a time with contextual follow-up questions.
Receive a detailed evaluation including:
- Overall interview score
- Communication assessment
- Technical knowledge
- Problem-solving ability
- Confidence level
- Strengths and improvement areas
- Personalized learning roadmap
Instead of asking generic questions, the AI tailors the interview to each candidate's skills and experience.
How We Built It
The project was built as a full-stack web application.
Frontend
- React
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
- Framer Motion
The frontend provides a responsive and intuitive interface for resume uploads, interview conversations, and performance reports.
Backend
- Node.js
- Express.js
The backend manages resume processing, interview session management, API endpoints, and communication with the AI model.
AI Integration
The application uses an LLM to:
- Understand resume content
- Generate role-specific interview questions
- Maintain interview context
- Produce personalized evaluations and improvement suggestions
A local fallback interview engine was also implemented to ensure the application remains functional during development or when an API key is unavailable.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges was making the interview feel conversational rather than simply generating isolated questions.
To address this, we designed the interview flow to preserve context across the session so that follow-up questions could reference previous responses instead of starting from scratch each time.
Another challenge was processing resumes in multiple formats. Supporting both PDF and DOCX uploads required handling different parsing libraries while ensuring the extracted content remained accurate enough for meaningful AI prompts.
Finally, building a polished full-stack application within a short hackathon timeline required careful prioritization. We focused on delivering a reliable end-to-end experience instead of adding unnecessary features.
What We Learned
This project reinforced that building AI applications is about more than integrating a language model. Prompt design, context management, user experience, error handling, and reliable backend architecture all play a significant role in creating a useful product.
I also learned the importance of designing software that can gracefully handle failures through fallback mechanisms while maintaining a smooth user experience.
Future Improvements
I see InterviewIQ AI evolving into a comprehensive career preparation platform.
Future features include:
- Voice-based mock interviews
- Real-time speech and confidence analysis
- Company-specific interview modes
