Inspiration

In the later months last year, my partner Jason and I were attending interviews to become residential advisors. We would complete mock interviews with each other, lacking any direction. We wished we could have had some 24/7 interview coach that had good advice and was always willing to help us.

What it does

InterviewIQ is a web application that allows users to practice answering interview questions while their webcam and microphone record their responses. The system analyzes both the video and audio to generate feedback. The computer vision component evaluates things like eye contact, posture, and stability while the speech processing system transcribes the response and analyzes the transcript to detect filler words and other speech patterns. By combining visual and speech analysis, InterviewIQ provides users with insights that can help them refine their communication and improve their performance in future interviews.

How we built it

InterviewIQ is a fully HTML/CSS/JS website, prompted from scratch with Claude. Through repetitive testing and gethering feedback we wrote prompts to optimize the user experience to account for any issues.

Challenges we ran into

When we first started the project we were unsure of how we were going to possibly analyze patterns from webcam tracking. How could we create a face tracker? We're freshmen! We were eventually approached by a mentor of Smith Capital Investors, and he told us about OpenCV, a computer vision framework we could use. This solved our problems rather easily regarding webcam tracking. We were able to implement it quickly and get a prototype running shortly after.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of completing something we've always wanted to make/use for ourselves. Who knows if maybe even one day five years from now, I'm still using InterviewIQ to practice for interviews. We turned a long awaited project into something that actually exists.

What we learned

We learned a lot about failure, but more so about how you recover. Throughout the process we ran into many hiccups. So many bugs that set us back from our previous versions that our morale was tanking after Panda Express. Eventually we pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps, got back into it, bought another Claude subscription, and finished the project.
