How we built it?

The space model is implemented using the Three JS framework based on NASA archive data. The other web static content is developed based on Bootstrap. The work is divided into space modeling and web application building. We worked together to help each other to solve technical issues and improve coding quality.

Inspiration

Since childhood, we have been interested in exploring the sky using our eyes and telescopes. We always want to learn more about the universe. And a good web application can help many people learn more about the universe.

What it does

The interstellar made people realize the distance between the exoplanets and human living is small, providing chances for most people to know where the planets lie and wander in virtual space freely.

How we built it

The space model is implemented using the Three JS framework based on NASA archive data. The other web static content is developed based on Bootstrap. The work is divided into space modeling and web application building. We worked together to help each other to solve technical issues and improve coding quality.

Challenges we ran into

There are more than 5,000 planets in our application. We tried different ways to optimize our code to handle the data effectively, but they did not work. Finally, we found a bug in our code and solved the problem.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is the first time we have attended a hackathon. It is 7 am, and we are still actively working on the project. It is a unique experience for us to finish a project in two days. And we did it.

What we learned

Before starting this project, our team members needed to familiarize themselves with web development. We have learned a lot about web development during HackSC. And we are more familiar with git now.

What's next for Interstellar

Currently, we are using the NASA Exoplanets database. There are only around 5,000 planets. We want to optimize our application to load the HYG data (which has more than 120,000 lines of data).
