Inspiration

"If you could live inside your happiest memory forever, would you?" INTERRUPTION was born from this simple question, which feels more urgent every day in our age of curated digital realities. The project was inspired by the tension between the raw, often painful, authenticity of the real world and the alluring, sterile perfection of a digital escape. It's an exploration of grief, memory, and the profound value of choosing to face a difficult reality.

What it does INTERRUPTION is an AI-generated short film that tells the story of Altan, a grieving lighthouse keeper who discovers a mysterious circular device. This device offers him a choice: remain in his harsh world of guilt and decay, or escape into a fake contentment—a virtual simulation of his happiest memories. The film is a psychological drama that visually contrasts these two worlds: one, a Tarkovsky-esque reality of texture, gloom, and decay; the other, both a sterile, shadowless, and uncanny digital void and bright, warm memory.

How we built it This film was not just "made with AI"; it was directed through AI, using a hybrid of classic filmmaking and generative technology.

Script & Vision: The process began with a traditional, detailed screenplay (co-written with Gemini), setting a strong narrative and emotional foundation.

Visual Constitution: Before generating a single frame, we established two strict visual style guides for the film's two worlds, defining everything from lighting (single-source vs. shadowless) to color palette (desaturated vs. sterile).

Generative Cinematography: Reve, Gemini, and Midjourney were used as our Director of Photography to create every keyframe, adhering to the strict visual rules and character references.

Generative Animation: Kling AI, Runway ML, Gemini, and Reve were used as our "camera" to animate these static keyframes, adding subtle, controlled motion (like slow pans or wind effects) that matched the story's emotional tone.

Voice & Post-Production: ElevenLabs provided the human voices and all the sound effects. All generated assets were then brought into Adobe Premiere Pro for a traditional editing process, sound design, and scoring.

Challenges we ran into The greatest challenge in AI filmmaking is consistency. Maintaining Altan's specific likeness, his weariness, and the oppressive atmosphere of the lighthouse across hundreds of different shots was a constant battle. This was overcome by creating our strict visual style guides and using consistent character references for every single generation.

Another challenge was directing emotion. AI can generate a "sad face," but directing it to show the subtle, internal conflict of a man choosing a brutal reality over a perfect lie required a new kind of filmmaking—one based on iterating hundreds of visual ideas to find the perfect, nuanced frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of Our biggest accomplishment was turning the AI's primary limitation—the "uncanny valley"—into a core narrative strength.

The fake, "off" feeling of the virtual family wasn't a technical bug to be fixed; it became a narrative feature. It is the very reason Altan realizes the simulation is a soulless copy, which empowers his final choice. We are proud of having successfully blended classic cinematic language (composition, lighting, theme) with the new, generative-native possibilities of AI.

What we learned We learned that AI doesn't replace the director; it challenges the director. This project confirmed that a strong, clear cinematic vision is more important than ever. You cannot simply "prompt" a film into existence. You must guide, art-direct, and iterate on every single frame, using the AI as an incredibly powerful, but ultimately mindless, collaborator. It taught us a new form of "AI-Assisted Directing."

What's next for INTERRUPTION INTERRUPTION is complete and is now beginning its journey. The next step is to submit it to festivals like Chroma Awards, sharing it with a wider audience to spark conversations about AI, art, and what it truly means to be human in this new generative era.
