I lived in Bangladesh for 9 years, and often during protests, elections and exam times, internet blackout was rampant. In recent years, especially during the student protests, Bangladesh tried incredibly hard to minimize information access in order to sweep things under the rug. With this I wondered how many other countries practice this? Why does no one notice?
What it does
This is a simple visualization of the data I have organized from a google database. It analyzes internet traffic discrepancies.
How I built it
I used pandas to organize the data and then excel to create the graphs from the organized data.
Challenges I ran into
I had massively reduce the number of data I wanted to visualize. I had tried to use geopandas to make the visualization significantly more interactive, however I was struggling to install the module.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm pretty proud at how much I actually managed to finish by the deadline. For a solid timeframe I hadn't though I'd make the submission.
What I learned
I have learned that there is always an alternative routes.
What's next for Internet Blockout: How Often Do Blackouts occur?
I hopefully want to expand this to include a better and more interactive visualization including more data.
