Inspiration
As a computer science student in Pakistan, I often found internship searching confusing and overwhelming. Opportunities were scattered across multiple platforms, and it was difficult to understand whether I was actually eligible for a role based on my current skill set. This uncertainty often delayed applications and created unnecessary stress. InternMatch was inspired by this problem.
What it does
InternMatch is a web-based internship discovery and skill-matching platform. It allows students to:
- Browse curated internship listings from tech companies
- View detailed requirements for each internship
- Compare their skills with job requirements
- Receive a Fit Score showing how well they match a role
- Identify missing skills
- Apply directly through official company links
How I built it
InternMatch is built using:
- Next.js (React framework with App Router)
- TypeScript for type safety
- Static dataset of internship listings stored locally
- Dynamic routing for internship detail pages
- Simple skill-matching logic using array comparison
The Fit Score is calculated by comparing required skills with user skills and computing a percentage match.
Challenges we ran into
- Understanding Next.js App Router and dynamic routes (
[id]pages) - Fixing module import and file path errors during development
- Structuring dataset and ensuring consistent exports
- Debugging runtime issues during initial builds
- Learning GitHub and Vercel deployment workflow for the first time
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a working end-to-end internship matching system
- Implemented a functional Fit Score feature
- Designed a clean and minimal user interface
- Integrated real internship links from companies
- Completed full deployment workflow using GitHub and Vercel
What we learned
Through this project I learned:
- How to build a full Next.js application from scratch
- How dynamic routing works in real applications
- How to structure and manage datasets in a frontend project
- How to debug build errors and deployment issues
- How to turn a real-world problem into a working product
What's next for Intern Match
- Add AI-powered skill recommendations using Gemini/OpenAI
- Allow users to input their own skills dynamically
- Add user authentication and saved profiles
- Improve internship data with real-time updates
- Expand beyond Pakistan to global internship listings
