Inspiration
We wanted to consider a transit solution that could help all have a better experience. From shared personal experiences from all of the team members, we would use several modes of transit to get from one place to another, and estimates for those trips on leading map platforms didn't provide that clear solution that consider different modes of transit for one trip, so we did.
What it does
Intermodal is a product that allows users to select each destination of their trip and decide the mode of transportation between each one.
How we built it
The current state of this application is natively for iOS devices. We built the entire program in Swift and utilized MapKit API and NJ Transit Data capabilities within the application to access real-life travel time estimates, map routing interfaces, and active rail stations.
Challenges we ran into
This project was an ambitious one considering all of us were new to Swift. We were determined to make this a mobile application because of the nature of potential practical use cases this application would be used in which oftentimes would be on-the-go.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of any progress we were able to make in 24 hours considering our experience in Swift and the time constraint. Additionally, 3 out of 4 of the group members are experiencing their first hackathon and that is a huge milestone. The app accesses live API's to add accuracy but also complexity to our program which was hard to overcome but accomplished a lot on that front. We also put a lot of consideration into the user interface that came out well providing a smooth and intuitive user experience, design, and color scheme.
What we learned
Throughout the intense building process of Intermodal, the team not only learned perform well in a high-stakes environment, but also how to communicate thoughtfully and effectively.
What's next for Intermodal
We hope to make the application more accurate with real-time traffic delays, bus routes, and data from transit agencies across the country.
