Inspiration
The classic games of the times gone by, with their pixelated universe, had a charm of their own. We were inspired by them to make a game that brings about a wave of nostalgia, reignites memories and provides the player a good time!
What it does
This is a player versus computer game in which the player has to defend against an ever-increasing barrage of cannonballs shot at their ship. The player uses keys to maneuver the pirate character, who uses a shield to block the incoming projectiles. Endurance is key here!
How we built it
We used Python (specifically the pygame library) in a modular fashion to create the various aspects of the game, from graphics to cannonball motion. We used various graphic design software to make the graphics for the game and implemented using sprites.
Challenges we ran into
Since all of our team members are students of heavily demanding university majors, coordinating and completing the code required pushing into our packed daily schedule, but this was mitigated quite tactfully by our team and we were able to complete the project in time and style!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of the fact that we have created a game that our players and team members can forever procrastinate upon, saving "The Booty Hauler" from the wrath of the royals!
What we learned
Our team as a whole learned how to exercise their coding, artistic skills, blend everyone's work together seamlessly and have fun making the game before even playing it!
What's next for Pixel Pirate
We found PyJaC to be a particularly rewarding and fun experience, and we hope to carry this enthusiasm forward into the next edition of PyJaC or other hackathons, either individually or as a team!
