Describe your research process and findings. If you conducted any surveys or interviews, please include the survey form and/or interview questions here. If you conducted secondary research by pulling from online sources, please include a link to your sources.
(A) The research process for UniConnect involves several key stages aimed at developing a comprehensive understanding of the target audience and refining the platform. It begins by identifying the target audience, specifically focusing on undergraduate students, and gaining insights into their demographics and academic backgrounds. A thorough literature review is conducted to explore existing studies on challenges faced by undergraduate students, aiming to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. The research incorporates interviews and surveys with a diverse group of students to gather qualitative and quantitative data. Engaging stakeholders, including university staff and administrators, helps understand multiple perspectives, potentially leading to collaborations. Competitor analysis is performed to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and prototype testing is carried out with a select group of students to collect valuable feedback.
(B) The interview questions for UniConnect encompass various aspects of the undergraduate student experience to inform the platform's development. Questions cover the general student experience, challenges faced in academic and personal life, perceptions of diversity and inclusion on campus, and personal experiences related to diversity. The inquiry extends to how students currently connect with peers who share similar interests and explores their views on community building and the support they feel is lacking. Additionally, the interview delves into resource accessibility, both academic and non-academic, and identifies challenges without effective solutions. Students are asked about their strategies for managing academic and extracurricular activities, time and effort-saving opportunities, and preferences regarding digital platforms for academic and social purposes. These questions provide a comprehensive understanding of the student perspective, guiding the development of UniConnect to address identified needs and preferences.
Describe your most important design decisions. What research findings and/or user testing results led you to make these decisions?
The design decisions for UniConnect were meticulously shaped by a synthesis of research findings and user testing results, emphasizing a user-centric approach. One crucial decision involved the creation of a dedicated Diversity and Inclusion Hub, inspired by the research finding that underscored the need for a platform promoting diversity. User testing further validated this need, revealing users' expressed desire for a central space to celebrate and learn about diverse experiences. Consequently, the decision was made to include a hub featuring profiles, resources, and awareness content, fostering a sense of belonging and enriching the community's understanding of diverse perspectives.
Another pivotal design decision centered around Community Building Tools, influenced by the research finding that students desired more effective ways to connect with peers who share similar interests. Positive feedback from user testing on prototype features related to community building and collaborative projects solidified this decision. UniConnect now integrates tools facilitating community formation, event hosting, and mentorship, enhancing the platform's capacity to foster meaningful connections among students.
Addressing the challenge of scattered resources, a Comprehensive Resource Hub was conceived based on the research finding that students found it difficult to access various resources spread across different platforms. User testing revealed positive responses to a centralized resource hub, leading to the decision to create a unified space for academic, financial, and mental health resources. This decision aimed to enhance accessibility and convenience, providing students with a centralized location for crucial resources.
Recognizing a desire among students to contribute innovative ideas and solutions, the decision to include an Innovative Solutions Platform emerged from the research finding. Positive engagement with prototype features during user testing validated this decision, leading to the implementation of a platform where students can crowdsource solutions to challenges. This decision contributes to fostering a culture of innovation and collaborative problem-solving within the UniConnect community.
The incorporation of a Task Management System stemmed from the research finding that users expressed a need for better organization and time management tools. Positive feedback during user testing on prototype features related to personalized planners and task management solidified this decision. UniConnect now includes a user-friendly task management system to assist students in staying organized and managing their time effectively.
To streamline various activities such as event sign-ups, club registrations, and course enrollment, the decision to integrate Activity Streamlining features was made. Users identified inefficiencies in current processes, and positive feedback during user testing confirmed the convenience of a unified platform for various activities. The inclusion of streamlined processes offers a centralized solution for administrative tasks, contributing to an efficient and seamless experience for users.
Lastly, the decision to implement Time-Saving Features was influenced by users' highlighting the need for tools to save time on routine tasks. Positive responses to features that simplified common tasks during prototype testing validated this decision. UniConnect now includes time-saving features such as one-click solutions and virtual assistants, enhancing efficiency and aligning with users' preferences for streamlined interactions.
In conclusion, these design decisions for UniConnect were carefully guided by a user-centric methodology, incorporating insights from research findings and iterative user testing. The result is a platform that effectively addresses identified challenges and meets the diverse needs of undergraduate students, promoting a positive and inclusive community experience.
