Inspiration
The goal of the project was to give a guiding light to students who need it. Whether this be students that are just lost, undecided, or have some sort of social barrier. The interactive piece of being tangible makes going around campus more attainable and less frightening for new students or visitors.
What it does
This interactive map can be placed in the UC, the accessibility office, in the different cafeterias, even outside near the seal. Places where students and visitors will be located and can plan out the rest of their day. Just Imagine, you're a junior in high school and doing the campus tour. The tour is at 9am and itβs about to start but the warm roasted smell of coffee bombard your nose. You turn your head and see the glowing lights of Starbucks shine back at you and get lost at the idea of getting a caffeinated hit. When you finally get your coffee you realize that everyone is gone but you see a glowing map that is still lit from the Tour guide hitting her button on her phone. So you know exactly where you are going, problem solved.
How we built it
Starting with a plywood base as a stand. The CMU academic buildings and residential buildings were modeled using CAD software and printed on a 3D printer. Then, the raspberry pi mini computer was interfaced with an iPhone using Blynk.iot and programmed to control LEDs placed within each of the 3D modeled buildings.
Challenges we ran into
Audio not syncing properly Building printing upside down Confusion over map
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Connecting Raspberry Pi to Wi-Fi Interfacing Raspberry Pi to iPhone Printing all building within time constraint
What we learned
Things don't always work the first time Connecting audio is more advanced then expected
What's next for Interactive Tour Map
Creating audio for visually impaired students. Adding different clubs and events that are coming up at central Adding sport facilities Adding other languages
