Interactive CUNY campus Maps

So when brainstorming we wanted to tackle a problem that we have been facing since we came to CUNY and one of the biggest issues we had was finding the resources building provided in Queens College. As seniors we knew what we could find in these building but if you were a freshmen you would have no clue on the resources you were missing out on.

So we ended up thinking of creating a interactive map detailing what resources building would be able to provide students and how they could help them.

We incorporated in Map box which had built in features to help make our idea a reality as well have it become scalable if we continued to make maps for all the CUNY campuses. We had each team member doing a different part with one working on data collection while another worked on creating the Cuny maps on map box and finally a person working on the landing page for the site.

Initially we wanted to use a drawing of queens college but we realized if we wanted to expand our platform to other CUNY campuses we would not have this resource so it would be more beneficial if we used map box instead since it already had the layouts of the campuses.

Some technical issues we faced was for the markers initially it honestly didn't look aesthetically pleasing and didn't provide enough details at first glance. So we made it so the markers had the pictures of buildings showing what it represented in a quick glance. Another issue we faced was related to map-box was the popups would go out of screen so we needed to add a scroll wheel in so users could use it properly.

One of the bigger issues we faced was merge conflict and it took a bit of time to learn how to deal with them and how to deal with them going forward.

Working as a team and bringing everything to reality felt really good. We were able to create a site that we believe can help future students. Also we were able to learn a lot technically and how to apply the software cycle to reality. regarding how to use Map-box, Apis as well front well

We all learned useful features regarding how to incorporate Map-box, Apis as well front end development features that we did not know how to use before.

We would love to make this a reality for other campuses and add in features such as timing for clubs, gyms and activities so students could it make it a one stop shop for learning about the campuses they are in.
