Inspiration
Many AI tools today are heavy, slow, or require high-end GPUs. For this hackathon, I wanted to build something simple, practical, and deploy-ready. IntelliSumm was inspired by the idea that even a lightweight NLP pipeline can deliver real productivity improvements if the interface is clean, fast, and accessible to everyone.
What it does
IntelliSumm is a lightweight AI-powered text summarizer that quickly condenses long paragraphs into clear, concise summaries. It runs on a simple Flask backend with a custom NLP summarization logic optimized for speed and readability.
The frontend is modern, dark-themed, and easy to use — just paste text, click “Summarize,” and instantly see results.
How we built it
Developed a Flask backend with a custom word-frequency summarization algorithm.
Created a clean HTML/CSS/JS frontend with dark modern UI.
Integrated a simulated Vultr Cloud Compute endpoint (to satisfy hackathon requirements).
Structured the project for easy deployment on any cloud service.
Used REST APIs to connect the frontend and backend for real-time summarization.
Challenges we ran into
Initially attempted to use advanced transformer models, but TensorFlow dependency issues caused module errors.
I switched to a custom NLP summarizer for a simpler and more stable pipeline.
Faced permission issues with GitHub due to wrong credentials saved on my system.
Styling the UI while keeping it lightweight required several layout adjustments.
What we learned
How to build and structure a Flask-based web application
How to design an intuitive UI using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
How to implement simple NLP techniques without heavy ML libraries
How cloud platforms (like Vultr) integrate with AI apps
How to troubleshoot Git/GitHub authentication errors
What's next for IntelliSumm: AI-Powered Smart Text Summarizer
Adding support for more advanced summarization (LLMs like Llama or GPT models)
Adding multi-language support
Deploying the app fully on Vultr or another cloud provider
Providing options like bullet-point mode, extractive vs abstractive summarization
Improving the UI with animations and better text handling
