Inspiration

We personally experienced the issue in the college cafeteria with lot of surplus foods. Wanted to take the hackathon opportunity to go in this direction and provide a suitable solution to it.

What it does

It generally manages waste based on previous foods and raw materials that are used to cook. Based on the historical data the application predicts what amount of food needs to be served in the next week. It also suggests you what amount of raw materials that would be required for the upcoming week. In addition to this, the application also helps student suggest meals based on the nutrition balance so that the students live a healthy life while being at the college away from home. Everyday based on the menu available and past suggestions the application suggests what needs to be eaten today in what quantities to balance out the nutrition.

How we built it

We made use of react for the frontend development where it has two dashboards one for students and another for the admin. The UI is easy and simple to understand and not messing with unnecessary graphs and charts. For the backend we took a dataset based on our requirement trained and tested them with the random forest model.

Challenges we ran into

We did not face any challenges explicitly while developing the code. But yeah there would be challenges to identify on how to quantify the wastage for which we have other plans too :}

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud enough that we were able to accomplish what we had in our min. Let's say at least 70% of our initial thought have been put into this project and the fact that we were able to complete this within a day is something commendable while being new to this technology.

What we learned

The AI development itself is a new learning since our team is very new to it. Got to learn what AI does generally and how it needs constant data to learn from its mistake and provide more accurate results based on the learning.

What's next for Intelligent Meal &Waste Management System

We do have our application to extend its features. Some of which it would be to identify the raw materials that are used seasonally and notify local vendors or farmers with the demand and supply ratio. Also introduce a leaderboard for students and track the nutrition count weekly or monthly and give out a meal pass to the podium finishers.
