Inspiration
Our story starts on a crowded road in Tehran, Iran. I was a little boy, sitting in the back seat of my fathers car, looking outside and wondering: "Why is there traffic in the first place?" That question stuck with me for over 18 years till I finally understood why traffic exists. Due to unnecesseary breaking, each car has to come to a full stop before finally accelerating again (yes, we are bascially blaming humans for something humans caused). These phantom traffic jams are one of the most frusturating things you can come across when driving and we intend to solve that problem. If you want a little more information about these jams, check out a youtube video regarding this matter: link
What it does
It Eliminates traffic and reduces Carbon Based Emissions drastically for a better enviroment for everyone to live in. By being able to reduce idling, we reduce our pollution so that our earth can thrive for thousands of years.
How we built it
Python is used as a front end, and backend for this project. The frontend uses a library called Tkinter to show the cars and intersection. And the backend is our own logic we have written for IntelliFlow.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into MANY problems while coding our idea, but that's the fun part of programming ;) On a serious note, we had to rethink our strategy many times so we could make the cars actually understand what was happening in the virtual space. We also have some minor bugs that we didn't have time to iron out. In some specific cases, the car can clip through another car in the same lane going in the same direction, and that is due to us not implementing full awareness of each lane for each car, but given more time, that can easily be implemented and solved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One major accomplishement we're very proud of is that roughly 80% of the time, the car detection works and no colisions happen. When we first saw this happen, me and my partner both became very excited to see our creation start working!
What we learned
We learned a lot about traffic! How traffic starts, how it can end, and possible solutions for over comming such a problamatic issue.
What's next for IntelliFlow
Next step is perfecting the collision detection functions and making sure that cars in the same lane don't accelerate due to being close to one another. And one other big thing to add would be turns. When turns come into the equation, object detection and the right choices to make in the scenario change drastically. Lastly, we want to integrate AI into its decision making, due to the complexity of the scenarios it can get itself into
