Inspiration
Studying can sometimes feel repetitive, and it can be difficult to stay motivated or keep track of progress. I wanted to make studying feel more interactive and rewarding, so I created IntellectRPG, a study tracker inspired by RPG games where study tasks become quests.
What it does
IntellectRPG lets students:
- Create Main Quests and Side Quests
- Choose difficulty levels and subjects
- Earn XP for completing quests
- Level up as they make progress
- Track study streaks
- View statistics and subject activity
- Unlock achievements
- Filter quests by type and subject
- Save their progress locally
- Interact with a cat companion that reacts to achievements and level-ups
How I built it
I built IntellectRPG using Python, Tkinter, and CustomTkinter. The application uses JSON for local data storage, allowing XP, levels, quests, streaks, achievements, and subject activity to be saved.
I started with a basic quest system and gradually added XP and leveling, difficulty-based rewards, statistics, achievements, filtering, save/load functionality, and the cat companion. I also worked on the interface to make the application feel more like an RPG instead of a basic checklist.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was keeping all the different systems connected correctly. Features such as XP, levels, achievements, streaks, statistics, filtering, and saved data all depended on each other, so changes in one part could sometimes affect another.
I also had to debug issues with the GUI, saved data, completed quest cards, subject tracking, and custom subject entries. Testing each feature repeatedly helped me understand how different parts of a larger application work together.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud that I was able to turn a simple study tracker idea into a complete working application with multiple interconnected features.
The project includes a functional XP and leveling system, achievements, streak tracking, statistics, quest filtering, local save data, and an interactive cat companion. I also completed the project with a polished interface and a working demo.
What I learned
This project helped me learn much more than just Python syntax. I learned how to structure a larger program, build GUI applications, work with JSON data, manage application state, debug problems, and use Git and GitHub while developing a project.
I also learned how individual features can gradually come together to create a complete application.
What's next for IntellectRPG
Future improvements could include cloud-based data storage, more achievements and quests, additional customization options, improved animations, and possibly a version that can be used across multiple devices.
AI Usage
AI tools were used as learning and development aids for brainstorming, explaining programming concepts, debugging, and troubleshooting implementation issues. I reviewed, tested, and adapted the code and remained responsible for understanding how the project works.
