Inspiration
We were inspired by the Break Through Tech challenge to provide a more inviting environment for aspiring WiCS.
What it does
It is a WebApp that allows Mentees to connect with industry professionals in the area (focused on alumni and faculty). Supports mentor search by keywords and an AI chatbot for understanding different fields within tech.
How we built it
Fullstack WebApp using React.js, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB. The chatbot was created using Rasa.py, however, it is yet to be fully integrated.
Challenges we ran into
The AI chatbot integration provided major challenges. We initially started with Google's Dialogflow API, soon running into a barrier due to a deprecated dependency punycode. Tried to extend Google's SessionsClient object that provided access to various APIs and override the functions dependent on punycode. However, we could not find a way to get past this deprecation (it's a shame that Google doesn't provide a punycode parameter in the Constructor). PLEASE FIX THIS!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating our team's first Hackathon project, and proud of the ideas that along with it. We are intending to continue developing in the future.
What we learned
We learned AI integration and the difficulties that can be encountered when trying to code as quickly as possible. We also learned that in Hackathons we should just keep trying new ideas if the initial implementation method doesn't, since time is at a premium in these competitions.
What's next for inTech Girls - FIU
We plan to continue developing this project. Fully integrate the chatbot capabilities, provide scholarship resources, possibly provide web-scraped recommendations, etc.
